What Is Employee Growth Rate & Why Is It Important?

We are interviewing and onboarding 100% virtually at this time. PagerDuty is focused on inclusion and employee well-being by building a culture that isn’t location specific and gives equal opportunity to everyone—regardless of where you are working. Unless your job requirements make it necessary to be in a company office, you may choose to work in-office, remotely, or hybrid.

As a Principal Software Engineer on our Incident Response team, you’ll be part of a fast-moving, high-performing, and innovative team tackling some of the most challenging problems in the company. You'll be our technical leader for the largest product unit within PagerDuty (consisting of 7+ teams) and across Engineering-wide.

As the SME, you will be consulted with and leaned on to make critical technical decisions. You will bring a long term point of view to the organization, working closely with the Product and Engineering heads, and create Long Range Plans for technical strategy that aligns with the company’s 3+ year goals. You bring a strong foundation on building enterprise SaaS products, excellent communication skills, and the ability to see the big picture. You may or may not code on a daily basis, but you could if needed.

How You Contribute to Our Vision:  Key Responsibilities

  • Be a coach and mentor to engineers of all experience levels. You’ve been a technical leader and really enjoy mentoring and leading projects and driving technical excellence within the team.
  • Lead and drive technical decisions across multiple teams.
  • Help provide direction to the question “what should we build next, and why”.
  • With 19,000+ global customers and growing, you’ll be solving really interesting technical challenges while helping to scale our services to keep up with demand.

Skills and Attributes

  • You are empathetic – you can clearly communicate your thoughts and opinions to others and facilitate these technical discussions to a successful outcome.
  • You do good work and lots of it; the drive to deliver is just a part of you.
  • You have a good understanding of the full web service architecture/technologies (e.g. CDN, request headers, API design, service load balance/routing, disaster recovery).
  • You have a strong passion for developing elegant and well-designed frameworks.
  • You have excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • You can prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a highly dynamic environment with a results-oriented mindset.

Minimum Requirements

  • You have 10+ years designing, developing, and managing customer-facing SaaS applications and web-based systems.
  • You have experience in designing, building, and operating large systems with scalability, availability, and performance requirements.
  • You have strong experience in designing and building REST APIs.
  • Experience in some or all of the following: Elixir, JVM, Ruby on Rails, Kafka, React.
  • Experience with agile (scrum, kanban, lean) delivery methodologies.
  • Public cloud engineering on AWS (preferred), Azure, or GCP platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • You have prior experience being the technical architect for large, high growth enterprise SaaS products.
  • You have experience with tools that ensure your high-quality work makes a smooth, automated, repeatable transition from your machine to our staging and production environments.
