Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Manager of Engineering on our Delivery Engineering team. As a Senior Manager on the Delivery Engineering team.. There is an opportunity for you to shape this role to some degree as we look to grow the team. You will help establish the long-term strategy for this team in its early stages of growth. This is a Senior Manager level role with the opportunity to grow into a director level position over time.

About the Team

The primary goals of the broader Delivery Engineering team are:

  • Develop centralized tooling, infrastructure, and capabilities that other engineering teams use daily to be more productive and ship software faster without compromising its integrity and quality.

  • Help build operational excellence across all of our systems by helping them be more reliable, secure and observable

We are grounded in the core value that product focused teams should concentrate on building or enhancing features that provide business benefit, whereas we provide them with the capability to do so and continue to make it possible for them to move faster without compromising the integrity of their software

Delivery Engineering over the last few years has had a massive impact on developer productivity and we are looking to increase our investment in the team to build better productivity tooling and centralize a lot of the complexity that several teams have to navigate today. In an ideal world, the tooling, architecture and infrastructure that the team builds would be far more leveraged than it is today and other teams would be more productive and deal with less complexity going forward. The team is central to the functioning of all other product engineering teams as The New York Times grows its journalism and product portfolio.

Role Description

This is an engineering leadership role, which means we are seeking candidates who are strong technologists, exceptional leaders of engineers, and highly collaborative cross-functional partners.

This role is open to full-time remote and NYC based in-office employees.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading multiple SRE and DevOps engagements with other teams, starting with NYT Cooking, Games (Crosswords, Spelling Bee etc.) and our new Audio products.

  • Building solutions with the product teams and eventually turning them into centralized offerings

  • Continuing to build a diverse and inclusive culture across all your teams

  • We expect our candidates to demonstrate competence in at least some of the following criteria:

  • You have led large, complex, and high-performing engineering teams

  • You have managed senior staff

  • You are passionate about creating inclusive environments and committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • You build strong organizational cultures focused on growth, innovation, and fostering creativity

  • You are skilled at sourcing, attracting, recruiting, hiring, growing, and retaining exceptional and diverse teams

  • You value building excellent partnerships and default to collaboration

  • You have experience in building centralized infrastructure, platforms, services, and other technologies that are used by a wide variety of internal engineering teams

  • You have extensive experience dismantling legacy systems while moving organizations onto modern technology stacks

  • You know what it takes to build large scale distributed systems, designed to be highly reliable, scalable, secure, and observable

  • You have a high degree of empathy for existing solutions and aren’t afraid to tackle legacy systems, processes and are able to challenge yourself and your colleagues in a positive way.
