What Is Employee Growth Rate & Why Is It Important?

About the role

As a member of the Infrastructure Engineering team, you’ll join engineers building the compute, data, and storage systems in which all of FireHydrant’s systems rely. You’ll work with Product Engineering and Core Services teams as your users to deliver an application platform that is easy to use, reliable, and scalable.

Infrastructure Engineering is part of our Platform Engineering group that is responsible for building the internal platform, tools, and services that enable our engineers to easily ship products to our customers that are simple, reliable, and secure. We’re a small and growing team, which means you’ll have the opportunity to influence the direction of foundational technical decisions and work on a diverse set of projects.

The work you’ll do

  • Designing and building the cloud-based infrastructure that are the foundation of FireHydrant’s products
  • Iterating on a multi-region and multi-cloud infrastructure platform that is performant, resilient, and scalable
  • Utilizing best practices to maintain resilient systems, but also plan for failure with processes for failover and disaster recovery
  • Participating in the on-call rotation, owning the reliability of our infrastructure, and resolving production issues along side Product Engineering
  • Contributing to open source projects that we rely on by filing bugs, pushing upstream patches, and being an active community member on the projects we depend on

What we’re looking for

  • Thinks about infrastructure as code, automates everything, and evangelizes observability
  • Has hands-on experience with at least one cloud platform (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  • Has worked with core infrastructure technologies in our stack and technology roadmap, such as Docker, Kubernetes, Postgres, Redis, Kafka
  • Has knowledge of, or wants to learn about, networking, CDNs, identity and access management
  • Comfortable developing software in at least one of the following languages: Ruby, Python, or Bash
  • Has experience working in backend software engineering, infrastructure engineering, or reliability engineering
  • Wants to build an internal platform used by the engineering team, starting with a product mindset and developer experience as a priority
  • Effectively communicates with stakeholders, collaborates with their team, empathizes with their users, and works effectively in distributed organizations

What you will accomplish

In one month you’ll

  • Understand the incident response space and FireHydrant’s role within it
  • Meet with the founders, leaders across FireHydrant and peers across engineering to understand how we work
  • Familiarize yourself with our delivery process from ideation to execution and release
  • Pair up with existing members of the team on active projects to build familiarity and begin contributing

In three months you’ll

  • Join the on-call rotation for our platform and participate in the incident response lifecycle
  • Identify areas for improvement in our current platform from an observability, performance or availability standpoint
  • Help refine the roadmap for the Infrastructure team
  • Mentor more early-career engineers across disciplines

In six months you’ll

  • Realize meaningful impact on the delivery of FireHydrant services and their availability
  • Work to educate the rest of engineering on how to use the services we provide by holding office hours, lunch and learns and more
  • Have established career-progressing goals with your manager and made progress toward realizing them
  • Have a deep understanding of your team’s domain within our codebase and a rough understanding of the machinations of other areas outside of your team scope

Our Technologies

  • Ruby on Rails, Golang, Javascript, React, RSpec + Jest
  • Google Pubsub + Sidekiq
  • Google Cloud Platform, Google Kubernetes Engine (Docker in local development)
  • GitHub, CircleCI & GitOps
  • Honeycomb, Datadog and Bugsnag
