What Is Employee Growth Rate & Why Is It Important?

Mapbox is the leading real-time location platform for a new generation of location-aware businesses. Mapbox is the only platform that equips organizations with the full set of tools to power the navigation of people, packages, and vehicles everywhere. More than 3.5 million registered developers have chosen Mapbox because of the platform’s flexibility, security and privacy compliance. Organizations use Mapbox applications, data, SDKs and APIs to create customized and immersive experiences that delight their customers. Whether you’re watching the delivery of your grocery order on Instacart, tracking your personal best mile on Strava, monitoring your gas budget on Metromile, or checking today’s forecast on The Weather Channel, Mapbox is the location and maps within those apps.

What We Do

The Search API & Infrastructure team at Mapbox owns scaling the Search APIs, Data Stores, and building new platform services that other Search teams at Mapbox can leverage to increase their feature development velocity. We make it possible for Search services such as Address Search, Point-of-interest search, and Places search to easily consume APIs and infrastructure that power billions of search requests from thousands of customers and hundreds of millions of end-users every month.

We work on developing the Search platform built on a foundation of ElasticSearch and AWS, and powers the development of high performance and low latency search algorithms in Search services.

All in all, this team works on an exciting mix of platform engineering, APIs for search and information retrieval algorithms, and problems in-between in order to support Search at a high-scale.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Search API & Infrastructure team, you’ll be responsible for, and expected to:

  • Design and implement improvements and features to the Search platform
  • Building an experimentation platform for running geospatial Search experiments
  • Being on-call for the operational excellence such as availability and latency of our Search systems serving billions of queries each month
  • Write, debate and implement technical design documents how to scale geospatial Search traffic, provide ways to A/B test different Search algorithms in production, federate to multiple backend Search engines and combine results.
  • Mentor other software developers to develop all aspects of their engineering skill sets, specifically how to maintain distributed systems and build robust information retrieval software
  • Meet directly with customers to better understand their needs and constraints in an effort to make better technical and product decisions

What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role

  • Experience building web services in at least one backend language, e.g. Rust, C++, Go, or Java.
  • Experience building highly-available API services within container-based environments (e.g., Docker, ECS, Kubernetes, etc. on AWS).
  • Experience in solving challenging search problems (e.g. Lucene, ElasticSearch, Sphinx)
  • Basic understanding of information retrieval systems and familiarity with terms such as precision, recall, mean-recurring-rank, term frequency, inverse document frequency
  • Proficiency implementing monitoring instrumentation, operational diagnostics, resolving customer issues, and continuous product improvement.
  • Knowledge of operating systems and distributed systems (e.g., fault-tolerance, consistency, service discovery, etc.)
  • A desire to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and knowledge sharing in a multidisciplinary environment, supported by mentorship experience and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A rigorous approach to problem solving, using experiments and data analysis to drive quality of service improvements.

What We Value

In addition to our core values, which are not unique to this position and are necessary for Mapbox leaders:
