UX/UI DESIGNER
CommonLit is a nonprofit EdTech startup dedicated to providing high-quality literacy instruction to low-income students and students of color to prepare them for success in college and careers. We operate a free online reading and writing program, www.commonlit.org, that is used by 7 million teachers and students monthly. We are a team of passionate professionals — many of whom are former teachers — that has grown very quickly in the past five years, especially since the need for distance learning resources has grown due to the pandemic.
As a UX/UI Designer at CommonLit, you’ll work with our Chief Product Officer and product team to design user interfaces and experiences for millions of students and their teachers as part of our digitally-delivered literacy curriculum. You’ll work closely with many teams at CommonLit (Product, Engineering, Curriculum, Data, Partnerships, and Coaching) to identify user needs and customer priorities, develop and test prototypes, write product requirements and design mockups, support engineers throughout development, and track and continually improve product usability.
CommonLit’s product roadmap is driven by user interviews, data, feedback from teachers through our User Support team, and partnerships with schools and districts across the country. We work in small iterations and deploy several times a day. We’re building an application that’s used by students and teachers across a broad range of technology and connectivity access, and we take accessibility seriously.

Responsibilities:
- Conduct ongoing user research and market research
- Collect qualitative and quantitative data about existing and future products/features
- Articulate and pitch design concepts to the team and manager
- Create UX/UI prototypes for new products to be used on both desktop and mobile devices
- Test new ideas before implementing
- Design wireframes and mockups for new and existing portions of the CommonLit user experience
- Write thorough product requirements, identifying edge cases ahead of time
- Scope and shape projects to weigh needs and team capacity
- Work with engineers to turn designs into implemented markup and code
- Creatively problem-solve technical and usability challenges
- Deliver the most user-friendly online user experiences possible for millions of educators and students
- Develop designs for multiple projects simultaneously
- Optimize existing user interface designs for usability and performance
- Help CommonLit maintain a consistent visual style
Qualifications:
- 2-5 years experience in UX/UI design
- Knowledge of UX/UI best practices for both mobile and desktop
- Knowledge of ADA requirements and accessible design practices
- Experience capturing information from multiple stakeholders, creating and testing prototypes, drafting product requirements, and designing user interfaces (particularly for less technically-proficient audiences)
- Ability to clearly and effectively articulate insights and recommended actions
- Strong skills with wireframing/prototyping tools
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Strategic self-starter who can prioritize time effectively
- Strong attention to detail
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn
- The following experience and technical skills are appreciated and should be highlighted in a cover letter, though they are not required:
- Experience working in/with communities of color
- Experience teaching or working with teachers and students
- Experience with Balsamiq
- CSS knowledge/experience
- Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Indesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
Location: US-based; remote position
Pay: Salary is $75,000-$100,000, commensurate with experience
