Advice and Guidance on Going Remote

Small Business Festival – Growing Your Business Virtually

The Australian state of Victoria is home to a thriving community of small businesses, being supported and celebrated this month with the annual Small Business Festival.

The month-long program features more than 450 events across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria including workshops, dinners and webinars.

High on the agenda of this year’s festival is the digital age, and how small businesses can use modern technology and the internet to grow their trade.

The opportunities reach far beyond starting a Facebook page or opening an online store, although, that’s a great place to start.

At Remote Work Hub, we regularly see small start-ups beginning with just a sole founder, quickly grow into teams of dozens, if not hundreds of staff.

Operating virtually and hiring distributed remote teams gives these businesses a competitive edge, saving on overhead costs, lowering wages and providing access to the best possible talent, not just in their postcode, but across the world.

Remote Work Hub founder Debbie-Jo Dutton says a lot of small business owners want to embrace digital technology, but sometimes struggle to see the opportunities available to them due to their traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ existence.

Even if a shopfront or on-site staff are essential to your business, there’s a virtual world of other options out there.

“If you’re a sole trader, you will probably need the help of other specialists from time to time, whether that’s marketing or web development or accounting, and working with these people remotely can offer a lot of benefits. You don’t have to leave work  or schedule more appointments into your already busy day. Most will work with you by email or video call, so you can get things done faster, and usually cheaper, than before.”

Small business owners can also complement their on-site teams with remote staff of their own, where roles don’t require a physical presence.

“A lot of people are surprised to learn just how much work can be done virtually,” says Debbie.

“We list new remote jobs daily ranging from tech, design, marketing, administration and accounting to doctors and nurses, college lecturers, and translators. The opportunities really are endless.”

Remote Work Hub is home to a verified database of virtual jobs from around the world. If you have a virtual vacancy you’d like to fill, you can list it for free.
