Are you interested in building a top flight technical documentation team focused on helping users for a popular and widely used open source project: Opensearch and OpenSearch Dashboards?

The AWS OpenSearch team is looking to build a dedicated documentation team to support OpenSearch and is seeking a talented and experienced technical writers to help us provide excellent documentation for a project that has already been downloaded millions of times. OpenSearch is an increasingly vital technology for search and analytics of machine-generated data. Developers and engineers use OpenSearch and OpenSearch Dashboards to gain timely insights into their applications, infrastructure, and security.

In this role you will work closely with open source users, Amazon OpenSearch Service customers, and the AWS product management and engineering teams to support an amazing product that people love to use.

Ideally, you have a technical background that enables easy interaction with software developers and a demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality technical documentation. Any experience you have with web services, Linux, XML, and Git is also a bonus. While we don’t expect you to be an expert in these areas, we hope you are excited to learn about them.

As a Senior Technical Writer, you will be responsible for providing a delightful documentation experience for the OpenSearch community. As a technical leader, you set the standard for excellence for our documentation, ensuring that we deliver technically accurate, well-written, simple, and user-focused documentation. You’ll help set team goals and be expected to deliver on those goals for maintaining a high bar for documentation quality.

Key job responsibilities
• Test new features, learn how they work, and document them in crisp, easy-to-follow language.
• Update reference tables, API summaries, and sample code.
• Work with developers and product managers to ensure that content is technically accurate and written for the appropriate audience.
• Work with designers on concise, helpful user interface text.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• A minimum of four years as a technical writer creating documentation for a developer audience
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
• A degree in computer science, English, technical writing, or a related field
• Ability to write sample code in at least one programming language, Java and Python preferred
• Familiarity with search technologies or NoSQL databases
• Comfortable with Git and the Unix command line

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Expertise with popular open source software: Elasticsearch, Lucene, Docker, Linux
• Understanding of the AWS security model and general computer networking
• Familiarity with HTML and CSS
• Experience with JSON and Rest APIs
• Experience with Markdown, and working in Github a plus
• Experience leading content development projects with multiple writers
