Why You Should Stop Fantasizing and Become a Digital Nomad

By February 9, 2017 Career Advice

Dropping out of the rat race to become self-employed or a remote worker is becoming a popular alternative to the 9-5 daily grind. But now there is a third option that offers even more freedom than simply working from home.

The rise of the Digital Nomad

Digital nomads are people who have not only dropped out of the daily commute, but out of being tied down to a singular location to call home as well. While working from home is a fantastic option that has far more pros than cons, becoming a digital nomad offers a whole new realm of freedom.

Many people believe the majority of digital nomads are entrepreneurs running location independent businesses. However, this is not the case. Starting a business is tough regardless of where you choose to work from. This is why most digital nomads start out as freelancers or remote workers with established companies. And even though they might find themselves being tied down to a work schedule, they still have opportunities to explore foreign lands and mix with different cultures.

Why You Should Stop Fantasizing and Become a Digital Nomad

A nomadic life brings freedom

A digital nomad may travel a continent in an RV or other vehicle, they may choose to hop all over the world, laying down temporary dwellings for set periods of time, or they may switch between a multitude of settings. Regardless of how they choose to live, the defining feature of the digital nomad lifestyle remains in the name: nomadic tendencies and a taste for freedom.

People become digital nomads for a variety of reasons, some of which can be deeply personal. The overarching reason though is a deep-seated desire for freedom. Digital nomads do not want to be tied down to any one location or any particular schedule. They want to travel the world and take part in unique and exciting experiences that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to.

Sometimes, they may even have financial reasons. Digital nomads often hail from the western world. To get paid in western currency while spending the currency of the developing world can allow people to live a lifestyle that they may not even have dreamed of back home. Digital nomads have the freedom to earn as much or as little money as they like, all while traveling the world and seeing things that may only have been confined to a yearly vacation before.

That sounds good. But why should I do that? I’m pretty comfortable where I am.

Step out of your comfort zone and see the world

The digital nomad lifestyle allows you to get out of your comfort zone in ways that you just can’t while working a 9-5 job. The daily commute, the gratingly inconvenient schedule, and even the demands of your boss all stand as nearly insurmountable barriers to living the location and employer-independent lifestyle that you want.

Imagine, at this moment, working on a project using skills that you love. Now, imagine doing that from a villa in an exotic beach location, spending very little of your earnings while you do it. That may sound like a distant fantasy right now, but should you drop everything and become a digital nomad, that lifestyle could become a reality.

Why continue to waste your skills and your time in a job where you’re underpaid and underappreciated? Why continue to drive an hour back and forth every day in teeth-grinding gridlock towards a job that you despise?

Opportunities abound

There are loads of opportunities out there. We know because we see them every day as more and more companies embrace the remote work movement.

We have close to 1,000 jobs on our database at any one time, and the good news is, the majority are location independent! Great for digital nomads who want to travel the world and work from anywhere.

Something else that sets us apart from other remote job boards – we don’t just focus on remote jobs in the tech industry – we cover every industry where remote work options are becoming available. So while you might need to be digital savvy to work remotely, you don’t have to be a complete tech geek.

There is a better way. There is an alternative. There are digital nomads living the dream that you’ve only ever fantasized about, right at this very second. Take a look at the pros and cons and then ask yourself the question – what do you need to do in order to make it happen? Start planning your route to becoming a digital nomad today.
