Job Summary:

The Allstate Innovation team helps drive Allstate’s future by identifying compelling business opportunities, developing selected opportunities into thriving businesses, and assisting Allstate businesses with meeting their innovation objectives. We bring together skills in strategy, design, technology, and marketing to create new products and businesses. And as Allstate’s corporate innovation team, we uniquely focus on the highest profile and most future-facing enterprise priorities.

The Allstate Innovation team is looking for a Strategy & Product leader to help define and drive innovative new opportunities for Allstate, focusing on emerging technologies, fast-growing startup market spaces, and highly impactful consumer problems. Examples of Allstate’s innovation successes in the past five years include:

  • Exploration of AI risk assessment technologies that resulted in a new B2B big data venture, Arity – a startup with the backing of a Fortune 100 company
  • Exploration of emerging device (e.g. smart phone) protection space that resulted in $1.4B acquisition of SquareTrade Inc.
  • Exploration of digital protection space that resulted in $525M acquisition of identity protection company InfoArmor Inc.
  • Exploration of peer-to-peer space that resulted in a new P2P car sharing venture, Avail – a startup with the backing of a Fortune 100 company

As Senior Manager of Innovation Strategy & Product, you will help identify, drive, and lead Allstate’s next big innovation. Example areas of exploration include: Web 3.0 (de-centralized Internet/blockchain), Internet of Things/smart home, future of automotive (EVs, autonomous vehicles), and the consumer data economy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and drive forward winning strategies and business models for Allstate’s emerging growth platforms/businesses, including framing the problem, scoping the work and delivery process, answer/hypothesis generation, and design of analyses.
  • Integrate strategies, business models, and goals of Allstate’s innovation efforts with broader enterprise goals and activities, identifying and capturing synergy opportunities.
  • Manage a cross-functional and cross-enterprise stakeholder group that includes the senior most leaders of Allstate. Build alignment through clear communication – rooted in a warm, collaborative engagement style. Tactically, this will require designing and structuring crisp discussion messaging and materials for executive-level meetings, and also taking on meaningful presentation roles in these meetings. Interpersonally, this will require developing strong relationships across multiple levels of leadership and earning influence and credibility along the way.
  • Drive a wide portfolio of strategic partnerships – e.g. product capability licenses with startups, distribution agreements with commercial partners, and variety of cross-Allstate, cross-functional partnerships.

Education, Experience, Knowledge and Competencies Preferred:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a top academic institution with a differentiated academic track record is required. MBA from a leading institution is a preferred, but not required.
  • 7+ years of work experience and a demonstrated broad business acumen
  • Strategy Consulting Experience: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of strategy consulting experience from a top-tier management consulting firm with a strong track record of performance. Direct experience managing Fortune 500 C-level clients and the ability to quickly get up to speed on unfamiliar subject areas is required.
  • Relevant Industry Experience: The right fit candidate will be passionate & conversant about business with a keen eye for disruption through technology.
  • Start-Up / High Growth Experience: The ideal candidate will be comfortable with ambiguity after having spent at least two years in a digital consumer product / platform company where they played a key role in growing and scaling the business across strategy, operations, business development, partnerships and / or product.
  • Structured & Logical Thinking: Superior critical thinking skills are critical to this role, including broad business acumen to tackle a wide range of issues in an integrated fashion (e.g. markets, competition, business models, operations, organization, etc.) and the ability to identify and define problems, collect data, establish facts and demonstrate a ‘nose for value’ to discern what is important and draw valid conclusions.
  • Analytical Excellence: Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to bring a creative approach and demonstrate ‘next level of thinking’ is required. Expert in MS Excel is required.
  • Powerful Communication: The right fit candidate will possess excellent presentation skills, powerful communication ability, and strong interpersonal skills. Expert in MS PowerPoint with experience planning and facilitating workshop sessions.
  • Leadership / Stakeholder Management: Successful track record of leading, developing and influencing a high-performing team at all levels of the organization, and experience developing strong relationships with a track record of delivering major strategic initiatives is critical.
  • Execution Orientation in Ambiguity: The successful candidate will thrive in ambiguity and is an out-of-the-box and creative thinker who is comfortable with questioning the status quo and generally accepted beliefs.

Compensation offered for this role is $125,000 – $182,000 and is based on experience and qualifications.
