Job Description

About the position

Wirecutter is seeking a lead editor to help manage assignments and edit product coverage on our PC team. Key coverage areas for this role include computer peripherals such as hard drives and mice, Android and iOS devices, and smartphone and tablet accessories.

As a lead editor, you’ll report to the section’s senior editor to carry out content plans, and work with a team of writers distributed around the country to support and maintain timely coverage. Our lead editors make sure our assignments stay on track, adhere to Wirecutter standards and processes, and reflect the news and information most relevant to our readers. Lead editors are responsible for editing assignments in their beat that can range from 500 word blog posts to 10,000 word product reviews, though most guides within the section are around 7,000 words. This role has the potential to be remote.

Responsibilities

  • Work with senior editor to develop the strategy for your beat(s) and assign projects to freelance and staff writers

  • Project manage multiple guides, blog posts, and other content with different writers; manage deadlines; plan and oversee product research and testing; review writers’ supporting documents and notes; edit and revise copy; and work closely with experienced Wirecutter editors to ensure stories are up to the editorial standards we’ve established in our hundreds of guides

  • Contribute original ideas to test planning, suggest creative reporting strategies, and challenge writers’ assumptions

  • Use data to support potential story ideas and track performance; work with our SEO team and editorial managers to plan new content

  • Write short form and occasional long-form content as necessary

  • Collaborate with and respond to queries from fact checkers, copy editors, and producers to prepare pieces for publication

  • Work with our community team to respond to reader feedback and questions; work with our affiliate team to resolve stock issues on recommendations; work with our operations team on product orders and testing plans; work with our photo editors to coordinate photography plans.

  • Perform related work as assigned

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working at a media company with at least one year of experience working with and editing writers

  • Either: experience writing and editing reviews of general products or services; or experience writing and editing news in relevant consumer electronics categories.

  • Strong category knowledge, with the ability to discern what’s essential and what’s unnecessary in your beats; passion balanced by skepticism of marketing claims and unproven ideas.

  • While we do have offices in New York City, we are a primarily remote company. A history of working remotely, or with remote colleagues, is preferred.

  • Excellent communication and task management skills in a remote work environment via Slack and video calls, with a distributed team that works remotely across many time zones.

  • Empathy for the frustrated or confused reader. We are not writing only for the experienced enthusiast, but for everyone who cares about spending their money wisely and buying the right thing the first time.

  • Other advantageous experience would include experience with understanding SEO and web analytics data for editorial decisions, creating test plans for product evaluation, collaborating with an art director and/or photo editor to present content visually, and expressing complex ideas using visualizations such as charts, graphs, or infographics

With your application, please include your résumé/CV, a cover letter, and five to seven published pieces that you’ve written or edited. You can only upload one file in the “Résumé/CV” box, so either combine and upload your documents as one file or use the “My Experience” section to attach your cover letter.

This is a union position as classified by the News Guild of New York.

About Wirecutter

Wirecutter helps people buy the right things for the way they want to live. The site was founded by journalists in September 2011 and was acquired by The New York Times Company in October 2016. Our recommendations are made through vigorous reporting, interviewing, and testing by teams of veteran journalists, scientists, and researchers. Consider us a best-of list for everyday things; a curated gallery filled with only interesting, useful objects; a thank-you note to the designers and engineers who create the stuff that makes our lives better; a geeky friend with next-level research skills who tests everything they buy so you don’t have to. The point is to make buying great gear quickly easier so you can get on with living your life.

We pride ourselves on following rigorous journalistic standards and ethics, and we maintain editorial independence from our business operations. Our recommendations are always made entirely by our editorial team without input from our revenue team, and our writers and editors are never made aware of any business relationships. Wirecutter is mission driven and reader supported; learn more about us here.

Our Company Principles

Our principles help us create a work environment that breeds trust, respect, learning and is one that we all are excited about showing up to each day.

Seek Understanding: We are lifelong students who want to understand the world around us. We are curious to understand our readers, how we get better at our own disciplines and how we can work better together. This means we are active listeners, information hunters and empathetic.

Explain Why: Because we seek to understand, we value the importance of explaining our ideas and our understanding. This means we are constructively candid, sharing our perspectives and the thought process behind it. And then learning from the conversation that ensues. We are all teachers and students, helping each other grow.

Solve Things: We love to solve things, whether they are our own problems, our readers problems or our colleagues problems. While we often can solve problems on our own, we believe our best results come out when we solve them together.

Get It Done: We are passionate about getting things done. Whether it is our own individual work or teamwork, our instinct is to forge a path forward and learn as we go. This means we continually focus on how to turn work into achievable chunks, communicate those effectively to the team and efficiently execute against them.

Make It Better: We aren’t satisfied with perpetuating the status quo. We’re always looking forward. We live to change the world around us for the better, making a difference in our own lives and our readers’ lives. If we are being ambitious enough, this means that we will both fail and succeed and we take pride in owning both of those outcomes as long as we are learning.
